At Step Ahead Physical Therapy, we engage in a collaborative care approach. We suggest effective therapies for you and work together with you to meet your rehabilitation goals.
Our services are custom-designed to help alleviate your pain and prevent future injuries and occurrences.
Our services include, but are not limited to:
Because we are committed to restoring active living for our patients as quickly as possible, we often use a series of therapeutic exercises. Some are conducted with us, and others are for doing at home to speed the recovery process. These exercises are especially effective in helping patients recovering from surgery or injury. We work with you to release muscle tension and stretch fascia and tendons that may have become contracted. Therapeutic exercises are useful for building endurance as well as flexibility and resistance.
Muscle reconditioning is a process that often helps injured patients prepare themselves for a return to sports, work, or active living. We focus on joint and muscle function as we work with you to address limited range of motion issues and joint integrity related to specific occupations or sports.
Our one-on-one patient care philosophy finds us often using effective manual therapy techniques to treat pain and reduced range of motion. We use our hands to apply mobilization of your muscles and joints to release scar tissue and reduce inflammation and pain, and restore mobility. We utilize trigger point techniques, myofascial release, soft tissue mobilization, muscle energy, joint mobilization and deep tissue massage when appropriate. We take the time needed to complete these effective treatments. Many have since abandoned these methods, either due to a lack of knowledge or unwillingness to expend the time and effort required. We still provide this advanced form of healing.
Functional Movement Screen
At Step Ahead PT we use the functional movement screen or FMS. It is a 7-point movement screen designed to identify dysfunctional movement patterns and asymmetries within the body. The goal is identify those at risk of injury and issue corrective exercises to prevent the injury from ever occurring. From the weekend warrior to the high level athlete, this screening can help determine your strengths, weaknesses and muscle imbalances. We utilize Move2perform, a movement measurement and analysis software system used by many professional teams, college programs and the US military, to help identify deficits and risks for injury. We are then able to address any deficits and reduce the likelihood of future injury by implementing proper treatment exercises and protocols for return to sport or activity. It is evidence-based and validated in peer review literature.
Pain Reduction Through the Use of Modalities
Besides the traditional effectiveness of pain reduction by heat and ice, we use modern modalities such as E-Stim, Ultrasound and Iontophoresis to reduce your pain and encourage healing. E-Stim, or electrical stimulation, involves the use of an electrical current to prompt your muscles to contract and thus, to strengthen it. This therapy also increases the blood supply in the area and that promotes healing. Ultrasound provides deep heating to your soft tissues including tendons, muscles and ligaments. The effect is decreased pain and increased healing. In iontophoresis, ions are applied to injured areas by means of an applied electric field to encourage more rapid healing.
Utilizing a wide variety of techniques to improve strength, flexibility and mobility, and latest modalities. We work closely with surgeons and utilize protocols to get our patients back to functioning like before. We customize therapy as per patient’s set goals and provide one-on-one communication. We have experience and expertise in joint replacements, tendon and ligament repairs (ACL/Rotator Cuff/Labrum,etc), fractures, cartilage and meniscus, and spine procedures (discetomy, laminecotmy, etc)
Athletes recovering from sports injuries and patients with problems of weakness in their joints and back can get relief from pain without restricted motion by the special science of Kinesiotaping. We are specially trained to use this therapy which has also been found to relieve post-surgical pain, swelling and reduce scar tissue.
Patients recovering from strokes or serious accidents sometimes have to go through the process of learning to walk again. We can expedite this challenge with our expertise in gait training. We use specially designed aids and analysis to loosen tightness of muscles and joints and help you move towards your goal.
Sports Rebab is a process of helping injured athletes prepare themselves to returning full force to their field of play. We focus on the restoration of joint and muscle function and work to increase range-of-motion that would be needed for specific types of athletics. We are experienced in working with players at all levels to help them heal their injuries quickly and perform at peak capacity. We focus on patient education, because we believe that understanding movement mechanics helps the athlete understand why injury occurs, and how to train to avoid injury, and ultimately how to train to excel in their chosen sport. Programs include:
- Sport Specific training programs include: Golfing, Running, Tennis, Biking, Hockey, and all Team Sports. We incorporate Plyometric, Agility and Proprioceptive Training into our programs.

Soft Tissue Mobilization
By loosening tightness of soft tissue in the body, we can reduce pain. In this process, we apply varying levels of stroking and pressure to your tendons, ligaments and muscles to bring about an increase in your range of motion and overall enhance your mobility.
The fascia, that connective tissue that supports and protects your entire body structure, can become restricted because of injury of certain conditions and pain results. With myofascial release, we use a soft tissue therapy to reduce pain and restore mobility.
We offer another specialized service called Cupping Therapy. Cupping has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. It is used dynamically and statically to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage. It helps to facilitate soft tissue healing by releasing scar tissue and promoting blood flow to the affected area. Cupping therapy is NOT painful.
Manual techniques used to restore normal biomechanics and anatomical alignment of joints to allow for proper movement and function.
One of the most important assessment tools for a physical therapist is to observe your body’s alignment and position relative to the force of gravity. That is because it is vital to your ability to stand, sit and walk. If you are out of alignment, you are more prone to falls and risks of injuries. If problems are detected, we work with you one on one with you through a series of special exercises and instructions to help you align yourself and be at less risk of falling and injury.
Work Conditioning/ Ergonomics
Just as injured athletes need to gradually get stronger to be ready to go back to their game, so too do workers need to be sure that injured muscles are strong enough to withstand the rigors of a full day on the job. We offer a complete methodology to ensure that your progress is done safely in varying stages to ensure that your healing is not negatively impacted. We can also assess your workplace to ensure that injuries do not occur in the first place thanks to advance planning and proper equipment and methods. We work with other partners in your workplace to protect you from injury and strain.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization
Advanced form of Soft Tissue Mobilization to Locate and Treat Scar Tissue in Tendon, Ligament, Muscle, and Fascia by use of Instruments. We use scientifically-validated tools to detect and treat pain and contracted muscles and tissue in the body. Check this video for a full explanation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJB8wBU8qas.
Iontophoresis is a therapeutic modality often used by physical therapists. It is a type of electrical stimulation that is used to administer an anti-inflammatory medication (usually Dexamethesone) into your body through your skin. The 24-hour controlled power iontophoresis system with battery on-board wireless system allows patients to receive the benefits of iontophoresis while continuing their daily activities.
There are many different uses for iontophoresis. These include, but are not limited to:
- Decrease inflammation
- Decrease pain
- Decrease muscle spasm
- Decrease swelling and edema
- Reduce calcium deposits in the body
- Manage scar tissue
